In common with most local cricket last weekend, Firwood Bootle’s Premier League match with Ormskirk at Wadham Road was seriously rain affected and petered out into a slightly tame draw.  The visitors chose to bat first, openers Andy Baybutt and Ian Robinson putting on a useful 47 for the 1st wicket.  After the latter departed for 27 the scoring rate slowed somewhat until a 3rd wicket stand of 85 featuring Baybutt (71) and Owen Griffiths (52) established a decent foothold for their side.  The declaration eventually arrived at 223-7 after 54 overs.

With weather interruptions taken into account, this left Bootle with what turned out to be 34 back and Ormskirk were given  encouragement by some disappointingly carefree shots from our top order batsmen as the total slid to 55-4.  Thankfully Danny Davies and Neil Williams fashioned a sensible and responsible stand of 40 which ensured that the visitors would not be leaving with winning points in the bag.  Bootle had reached 106-5 at close of play, the only downside to the result being that we had inadvertently helped Northern to double their lead at the top of the league table – the last club for whom we would knowingly want to do any favours.
